Know Your Triggers

If you’ve watched my YouTube channel, you’ll know that I’m going through a period of non-keto eating.  I’m not going to call it “cheating” because it’s not about being on a diet.  Keto is a lifestyle choice I’ve made for my health as well as weight loss.  I just chose a different lifestyle for a week or so.  Here’s some of the things that trigger me to diverge from my chosen lifestyle.

Travel

There’s something about not having my own kitchen that just sends me into the convenience store along the road.  Air travel is especially triggering for me.  If I’m going to go down in a fiery crash, I want just one more KitKat before I go.  We have some travel coming up in the next month so I’m going to make sure to pack some good keto travel foods like protein bars and pepperoni sticks.

Social Gatherings

I recently went to a party  where everyone congregated in the kitchen and around the dining table. The table was just loaded with food.  I knew that there was going to be food at the party, so I planned ahead and ate before I got there to ensure that I wasn’t hungry.  I resisted the food for about 3 hours and then I succumbed to the baklava.   I just couldn’t take looking at it anymore. Next time I’m invited to a party, I’m going to bring something keto that’s just as tempting as whatever might be on offer.

Low Carb/Keto Desserts

The problem is that there are so many good recipes that taste just like the sugar version, that they cause me to crave the real thing.  I recently baked up 3 different batches of keto chocolate chip cookies,  then I ate them all because they tasted so good and then just continued on for the rest of the week making some really poor choices. Just looking at the food pictures on Instagram can be a trigger.  Even if the picture is of a keto dessert you can’t tell from the picture that it’s keto so my little brain just sees BROWNIES! and then I want brownies….or cheesecake or cookies.

Poor Choices left in Plain Sight

It would be nice to just be able to throw out or not buy non-keto food, but there are two other people living in my house that aren’t eating keto.  So sometimes there are things like croissants, chips and bread in the house.  I can resist a poor choice if it’s away in a cupboard but if it’s sitting on the counter I can be tempted.  I need to make sure that the carbs are put away (and maybe on a high shelf) where I can’t see them. I also need to make sure that I have lots of good keto choices available instead.

Anyway, those are some of my triggers.  What triggers you?
